Project Status: Sketch Design
Location: Onslow, WA
Year: 2013

Description:
A house for the fast developing, remote town of Onslow. Limited construction resources in the area dictated the need for a modular solution that could be largely prefabricated off-site, transported by truck to the township and erected with minimal on-site trades.

The clients brief insisted on a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home with ample living and activity area, this and the bounds of a truck bed led to the development of a 3 part design solution. Two stacked modules contain the bedrooms and bathrooms while a third that comprises the living, kitchen and activity spaces sits on a large steel portal frame that forms a carport below. The stairwell and kitchen pop-outs break up the East and West facades to allow additional light into the spaces. The modules are staggered in plan to create a large balcony at the front the site in order to take advantage of views over the township to the Ocean and coastline beyond. The stagger also forms an outdoor dining area to the rear of home.

Windows to the East are protected by shading devices while an extruded canopy shades the balcony and creates a deep reveal that wraps the northern façade.
